If you live outside the UK, please get in touch before you order. I can look into using a print on demand service in your own country, which avoids international postage and import charges, though it may change the price of the print itself.

Since the Victorian invention of the camera, Whitby has enjoyed a long successful relationship with photography. Frank Meadow Sutcliffe was the first early photographer to really gain high recognition. His work captured the everyday people, their lives and the port of Whitby as well as the living conditions of the era. Other pioneering photographers include The Doran Brothers and John Tindale. It also attracted the attention of nationwide photographers including Francis Frith

When the manufacture of mass-produced cheaper cameras were introduced for the general public, many chemist shops in Whitby stocked them and the film, many also provided photo developing and printing services.

The Kodak Duaflex II was an affordable model made between 1950 and 1954 and would have probably been a popular choice in the chemist shops. Maybe even “Doran Brothers” stocked them at their shop and studio on Marine Parade which today is The Dracula Experience. Photographers today still thrive by using their honed techniques to capture the stunning scenic views and selling their prints.

The original artwork was produced from an observational drawing of my own Duaflex II camera and rendered in soft B pencils on coloured paper.
